Chic & Rustic: A Farmhouse Kitchen Makeover Story
When authorized Greenfield Cabinetry designer, Kayla Garbrecht, AKBD, of Broken Arrow Cabinetry and Design, Watertown, Wisconsin began the remodeling process for herself and her young family, it was a unique challenge. “Being a designer and doing your own kitchen is both a dream and a nightmare, because you know all the options available AND, you know all the options available,” shares Kayla.
“We saw so much potential in the 1890s farmhouse, but we knew the kitchen was going to be a major project; one which would be so rewarding when completed,” adds Kayla. She continues, “Our style is very rustic. It was important our style also mesh with the history of the house, and to fit the Wisconsin landscape outside the windows.
“I knew I wanted to open the space to more light, have seating in the kitchen, have some open storage, knock out the soffit and take the cabinetry to the ceiling.”
BEFORE RENOVATION:
Among the major problems in the old kitchen were a lack of natural light, and a dated and dysfunctional layout. “The old layout was a U-shape, and there was a ton of wasted space,” notes Kayla.
AFTER RENOVATION:
Cabinetry: Greenfield Cabinetry, featuring the Hemingway door style in Knotty Alder wood, with a Natural (clear) finish, Matte sheen, and a sheer Brown Glaze.
Kayla describes, “We wanted cabinets which are distinctly rustic; wood cabinetry, which has knots and really true character in the wood.” She also notes, “We really like the Greenfield option, which is a glaze on top of the natural finish; it beautifully enhances the knots and natural wood elements of the cabinetry.”
